I recently signed a petition expressing my dissapproval with the education budget. A (Democratic) member of the NC House sent a letter to everyone who signed it explaining more about the budget and making it clear that he supports public education and teachers.
I spent today sending more letters. One to my district representative (who I've written several times), one to the senator who met with me a few weeks ago, and one to the representative who sent us the email mentioned above. All the griping and negativity lately has made me exhausted. I am tired of sending negative letters repeating my concerns with the budget, so I decided to send a thank you email to the representative who emailed us in response to the petition. It reminded me that there are some people on our side, and it made me feel better. I heard back from him today, and here is what he said. I think it's important for teachers to hear.
"Thanks so very much for your very kind email and I intend to keep fighting as I
know many of my Democratic colleagues will continue to do. Many thanks as well for your work in education which really is the most important profession in the nation. We will get through this and eventually, sooner rather than later, the State will recognize and reward teachers. Truly, your thoughful words are deeply appreciated and just know how much you and your colleagues are really valued by a majority of our society, even if not in the legislature right now."
That was a breath of fresh air, even if it is an attempt to win more votes.
